Evening Oppo. So last night I made a post asking about cheap coilovers for DD duty(shocks/struts are blown, don’t want to invest a lot in this car as it will be replaced in the next 24 months). However, I listed JOM as an example and a lot of the comments were specifically about that particular brand that no one had any experience with. So, after reading forums and reviews for about 6 hours, I have come to the conclusion that the Raceland Ultimos ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) would be the best bet for ‘cheap’ coilovers for my particular car (Mk4 Jetta 1.8t). What stands out the most for me is the newest version is all powder coated for rust prevention, and a stronger/wider internal piston for reliability when people go really low, and stiffer spring rates to match the shocks. Edit: Lifetime warranty also, according to the website.
For me, I don’t particularly want to go low. I would most likely keep any set at the maximum height all the time. So, does anyone have any experience with Racelands, or can comment on long term reliability for DD duty? (They are not going to be pushed) Any other suggestions on suspension are welcome (2001 VW Jetta Wolfsburg). Thanks!

Ultimos are good.
The regular ones are a different story. I had a set of regular Racelands on my A4, oh goodness that thing rode like a school bus. Handled well tho

Monroe Quick Struts. Also, there’s a $75 rebate on the set of four for your car.

Yeah after reading a bunch it seems the Ultimos are a welcome upgrade to the original Racelands/Rokkors. Beefier all around. If you have Ultimos, how long have you been running them? I’m likely only going to have this car for another year or so, so I don’t need life-long stuff (even though I see they come with a lifetime warranty now anyway). If they hold out for 2 years of DD duty and stoplight to stoplight spirited driving, I’ll be happy.

Are Bilsteins still a thing for VWs?

I personally haven’t run them, but I know people that have and enjoyed them.
Budget coilovers are usually not even a mixed bag, they’re either bad or OK. There’s really no great from what I’ve seen. They will last if you install them correctly, make sure to use anti-seize lubricant on the threads or the warranty will not be honored.

“Racelands” are a four-letter word in the MK1 Focus community. They’re good for going low and are NIB like $350, but they ride like donkey balls.

Cheap coilovers aren’t worth buying. They ride like shit and usually handle like it, too.

Have you ever heard of STAGG? They’re decently priced.

Do you know anyone who has ever used STAGG shocks? They’re a good price.

Hell, just buy solid shocks and cut the springs. Same difference. And cheaper.
